Flamenco: Spain’s Most Iconic Traditional Dance

Flamenco is Spain’s most iconic traditional dance. Born in Andalusia, it blends singing, guitar and dance, and has been recognised since 2010 as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. It can be learned at any age with no prior experience, including in a private class in Barcelona.

What is flamenco?

Flamenco is a performing art that combines three inseparable elements: singing (cante), guitar (toque) and dance (baile). It expresses a wide range of emotions, from sorrow to joy, through arm movements, footwork (zapateado) and a rhythm marked by palmas (hand claps) and castanets.

Where does flamenco come from?

Flamenco originated in Andalusia, in southern Spain, with roots also found in Murcia and Extremadura. It grew out of the blending of several cultures present in the region over the centuries – Andalusian, Romani, Arab and Jewish – before taking shape as an art form in its own right in the 18th century.

On 16 November 2010, UNESCO inscribed flamenco on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, cementing its status as a Spanish cultural treasure.

Cante, toque, baile: the three pillars of flamenco

PillarWhat it is
CanteThe singing, often a cappella, that carries the emotion of the piece
ToqueThe flamenco guitar playing, which accompanies and dialogues with the singing
BaileThe dance: footwork, arm movements and bodily expression

Can you learn flamenco with no experience?
